Apple expected to announce “Apple TV 4K”

Apple expected to announce "Apple TV 4K" Apple

The current Apple TV is nearly two years old. That’s why it’s not surprising to learn that Apple has been working on a new device for a while. This weekend, an upcoming build of iOS 11 for the next iPhone was leaked and contains a ton of information about unreleased products, including the next Apple TV.

A previous leak of the HomePod firmware already indicated that Apple was working on an Apple TV with 4K video support. The new device could also support various high-dynamic range standards, such as Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma. The company could announce 4K videos on the iTunes Store as well as in the Netflix app.

And now, Steve Troughton-Smith discovered some of the technical specs of the next Apple TV. According to him, the media player is going to receive a major performance gain with a lot more computing power and RAM:

Apple first shipped the A10 with the iPhone 7 last year. The A10X is an updated version of this chip optimized for the most recent iPad Pro. It’s a surprisingly fast system-on-a-chip. It’s sometimes even faster than a MacBook.

The current Apple TV sports an A8 system-on-a-chip, the one that was developed for the iPhone 6. It’s a bit hard to grasp Apple’s progress when it comes to silicon. According to Geekbench, when you compare the A10X with the A8, the A10X is 1.7 times faster for single-core tasks, 2.8 times faster for multi-core tasks and 5.7 times faster for Metal-focused, GPU-intensive tasks. It’s a huge improvement overall.

This upgrade in particular is going to feel great when you’re trying to stream 4K videos. Skipping forward and backward should feel snappy. And your videos will never buffer, even if you’re trying to play 4K videos with 60 frames per second (the new iPhones should let you shoot 4K videos with 60 FPS).

In addition to a faster system-on-a-chip, Apple could also include 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB. This way, you’ll be able to cache a good chunk of the movie or TV show you’re currently streaming.

Apple could announce the new Apple TV as early as tomorrow during its annual September press conference. The company could also use this opportunity to showcase some new video games running on the Apple TV as it’s quite a capable device now.

Volkswagen to offer electric versions of all of its vehicles by 2030

Volkswagen to offer electric versions of all of its vehicles by 2030

Volkswagen is the latest car maker to announce a move to electrify its entire range of automobile offerings: The car maker will provide either hybrid or electric versions of every one of its 300 models by 2030, it announced today ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show in German.

VW’s not the first to make a similar commitment — and in fact Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz announced it was going to do the same by 2022 earlier today. But the Volkswagen Group’s vehicle range is quite a bit larger than Mercedes-Benz’s, which makes this a more significant overall commitment.

By 2025, Volkswagen plans to offer 80 new electric vehicles across its group and sub-brands, which include Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and the Volkswagen brand itself. VW has committed to spend nearly $23 billion U.S. on getting this plan in place via zero emissions technology investment, and it also said it would commit more than $55 billion toward purchasing batteries to provide power for these vehicles.

The news also follows the big announcement from this weekend that China would be banning fossil fuel burning vehicles eventually, joining commitments made by the U.K. and France before. There’s clearly a trend on both the regulatory and the industry side of the equation with regards to electrified vehicles, but there will still be a lot of questions and work to be done in terms of maturing the supply chain and overcoming technology and infrastructure challenges.

Mercedes-Benz will electrify its entire car lineup by 2022

Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to embrace electrification, announcing that it will be electrifying its entire vehicle lineup by 2022. Get used to it: Car makers are going to be making these announcements at an increasing clip, especially now that China, the most important car market in the world right now, has announced plans to eventually move to ban the sale of fossil fuel vehicles entirely.

Here’s the deal: Mercedes-Benz chief Dieter Zetsche said that the car maker will offer either hybrid or fully electric versions of its vehicles by 2022, adding up to a total of a minimum of 50 new electric model options by that time. Smart, meanwhile, another Daimler-owned sub-brand, will go fully electric by 2020.

This puts Mercedes-Benz in good company with other higher-end car manufacturers, including Volvo, which have committed to offering a fully electrified lineup by 2019, and Ford’s Lincoln luxury sub-brand has also set 2022 as the deadline for offering electric variants of each of its vehicle models.

As mentioned, China announced over the weekend that it would eventually ban the sale of all fossil fuel-powered cars in the country, within a timeline to be determined. China’s vehicle sales numbers have led the world recently, and are increasing at an impressive clip annually, so automakers reconfiguring their long-term strategy to focus on EVs in light of China’s favoring of EV tech makes plenty of sense. France and the U.K. have also expressed plans to phase out fossil fuel cars by 2040.

The Google Drive app for PC and Mac is being shut down in March

The Google Drive app for PC and Mac is being shut down in March

The aging Google Drive app for desktop is officially deprecated as of today, Google announced in a blog post. Support will be cut off on December 11th and the app will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. Users who are still running the Drive app will start seeing notifications in October that it’s “going away,” and the company will steer customers towards one of two replacements depending on whether they’re a consumer or business user. Google Drive the service isn’t going anywhere. You can still access it from the web, smartphone apps, and either of the software options mentioned below.

Google now has two fairly new software tools for backing up your data and/or accessing files in the cloud. There’s Backup and Sync, the all-encompassing consumer app that replaces both the standalone Google Drive and Google Photos Uploader apps. It offers essentially the same functionality as Drive and works much the same way.

And on the enterprise side, Google has rolled out Drive File Streamer, which saves space on your local drive while providing access to “all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer.” It’s a much more elegant and integrated approach. “Say goodbye to time-consuming file syncing and any concerns about disk space,” Google says of the benefits that Drive File Streamer introduces.

There are some differences between the apps; both can do one or two things that the other can’t, so check out Google’s help pages to see which is the better fit. For most people the Backup and Sync option is probably it, though power users have complained about its lack of support for NAS drives.

Nissan launches the new electric Leaf

Nissan launches the new electric Leaf

Nissan on Wednesday introduced the new Nissan Leaf, the next evolution of its zero-emission electric vehicle.

The Nissan Leaf has been completely reinvented, combining greater driving range with a new design and advanced technologies.

“The new Nissan LEAF, with its improved range, combined with the evolution of autonomous drive technology such as ProPILOT Park, and the simple operation of the e-Pedal, strengthens Nissan’s EV leadership as well as the expansion of EVs globally. It also has core strengths that will be embodied by future Nissan models,” said Hiroto Saikawa, president and chief executive officer of Nissan.

The new Leaf offers a range of 400km, allowing drivers to enjoy a longer journey. The new e-powertrain gives the new Nissan Leaf 110kW of power output and 320 Nm of torque, improving acceleration.

Charging time (normal charging):

  • 16 hours (3 kW);
  • 8 hours (6 kW);

Charging time from alert to 80%  – quick charging – is 40 minutes, Nissan said.

The new Leaf also features ProPILOT autonomous drive technology, used during single-lane driving on the highway, and ProPILOT Park, which when activated, takes control of steering, acceleration, braking, shift-changing and the parking brake to automatically guide it into a parking spot.

New e-Pedal technology lets drivers start, accelerate, decelerate and stop by increasing or decreasing the pressure applied to the accelerator. When the accelerator is fully released, regenerative and friction brakes are applied automatically, bringing the car to a complete stop.

The car holds its position, even on steep uphill slopes, until the accelerator is pressed again.

The new Nissan Leaf will go on sale on 2 October in Japan. The model is slated for deliveries in January 2018 in the US, Canada and Europe. It will be sold in more than 60 markets worldwide.

Nissan said it will also offer a version with more power and longer range at a higher price in 2018 (timing may vary by market).

BMW to offer 12 fully electric car models by 2025

BMW to offer 12 fully electric car models by 2025

BMW says that it’ll have a total of 25 electrified vehicles in its lineup by 2025, with a full dozen of those being full-electric cars. These should have a usable range of up to 435 miles, BMW CEO Harald Krueger told reporters, according to Reuters.

That’s another brick in the wall for the ongoing automotive market powertrain switch, which gained steam today with another announcement from Jaguar Land Rover, which committed to making sure its entire lineup of vehicles has an electric car option by 2020.

The BMW move will include making sure it has the ability to mass produce its electric vehicles and drivetrains in sufficient quantities to cover the range and demand: All of its cars should also be able to offer electrified powertrain options, whether fully electric or hybrid, by the 2020 mark.

BMW is planning to show off a new zero-emission all-electric four-dour vehicle at the Frankfurt auto show next week, which will sit between the current i3 and i8 offerings in its EV lineup.
