Apple Releases Redesigned ‘Apple TV Remote’ App for iPhone

Apple Releases Redesigned 'Apple TV Remote' App for iPhone Apple TV

Apple has released an all new Apple TV Remote app for the iPhone, which is used to control the fourth-generation Apple TV along with older Apple TV models. Announced at WWDC, the new Remote app has been available for developers since June and was released to the public this afternoon.

The new Remote app, which connects to an Apple TV via Bluetooth, mimics the exact layout of the physical Siri Remote for a navigation experience that’s streamlined across different input methods. Its design was inspired by the Siri Remote and is a significant improvement over the previous Apple TV remote app.

When content like movies or music plays, the Remote app features a full “Now Playing” view for control purposes, along with a dedicated Menu button and a Siri button. As with the physical Apple TV Remote, navigation through the iOS app is done using touch gestures.

Entering text, like passwords and usernames, is much easier with the iOS Remote app because any text field automatically brings up a keyboard. Full Siri voice commands are supported, as is dictation. Because it includes the same gyroscope and accelerometer in the Siri Remote, an iPhone can be used as a dedicated game controller for playing games on the Apple TV.

The Apple TV Remote app requires iOS 9.3.2 or later to install and it works with the current version of tvOS, 9.2.2. It can also be used to control Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3 models.

The Apple TV Remote app can be downloaded from the App Store for free.

New Apple TV Expected Price in South Africa

New Apple TV Expected Price in South Africa Apple TV

Who is excited about the New Apple TV coming to South Africa?

Once you see the price things might change. The previous generation Apple TV sold for R1 049 in South Africa and was worth every cent. The previous Apple TV sold for $99 in the US and the new Apple TV is selling for $149. Simple maths would suggest that the new Apple TV should sell for between R1 500 and R2 000, but you would be mistaken.

The New Apple TV is expected to cost a whopping R2 799 for the 32GB and R3 499 for the 64GB .

How did we get to that price? It’s really easy actually. The recently updated iPod Nano sells for $149 in the US, the same as the New Apple TV. The recently updated iPod Nano is currently available from resellers for R2 799.

Apple Introduces The All-New Apple TV Apple TV

The all-new Apple TV is built from the ground up with a new generation of high-performance hardware and introduces an intuitive and fun user interface using the Siri Remote™. Apple TV runs the all-new tvOS™ operating system, based on Apple’s iOS, enabling millions of iOS developers to create innovative new apps and games specifically for Apple TV and deliver them directly to users through the new Apple TV App Store™.

There has been so much innovation in entertainment and programming through iOS apps, we want to bring that same excitement to the television. Apps make the TV experience even more compelling for viewers and we think apps represent the future of TV.

— Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of Internet Software and Services

The new Siri Remote dramatically simplifies how you select, scroll and navigate through your favorite content while bringing unique interactivity to the new Apple TV by using a glass touch surface that handles both small, accurate movements as well as big, sweeping ones. Adding touch to Apple TV creates a natural, connected experience, even if the TV screen is on the other side of the room. Developers can take advantage of the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, and the touch surface on the Siri Remote to create games and other app experiences that have never been seen on TV before.

With Siri, you can use your voice to search TV shows and movies by title, genre, cast, crew, rating or popularity, making it easy to say things like “Show me New Girl,” “Find the best funny movies from the ’80s,” “Find movies with Jason Bateman” and “Find popular TV shows for kids.” Apple TV will search iTunes® and popular apps from Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime, displaying all the ways the resulting TV shows and movies can be played. Siri also offers playback control and on-screen navigation, as well as quick access to sports, stock and weather information.*

tvOS is the new operating system for Apple TV, and the tvOS SDK provides tools and APIs for developers to create amazing experiences for the living room the same way they created a global app phenomenon for iPhone® and iPad®. The new, more powerful Apple TV features the Apple-designed A8 chip for even better performance so developers can build engaging games and custom content apps for the TV. tvOS supports key iOS technologies including Metal™, for detailed graphics, complex visual effects and Game Center, to play and share games with friends.

Apple TV is expected by the end of the year in South Africa.

What to expect from Apple’s 9 September Media Event

There has been very little news leading up to Apple’s Media Event on the 9 September however the last few days revealed some interesting news which we will sum up below.

What to expect from Apple's 9 September Media Event Smartphone Smart Watch iPad iOS Apple TV

iOS 9

Apple announced iOS 9 at WWDC back in June but they always keep something back that relates to the new iPhone which will be the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Most of the updates in iOS 9 are performance related.

iOS 9 Golden Master will be released to developers after the even with the final software being released to the public on 16 September.

iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus

Apple will unveil the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Most of the rumours say that Apple will give both devices an updated camera along with Force Touch. Being a minor update to the iPhone there will be little in the way of new hardware. Most of the changes will come within iOS 9.

iPad Pro & iPad Mini 4

Apple is expected to release a 12,9inch iPad Pro and a updated iPad Mini that follows the design of the iPad Air 2, a A9 processor and improved display.

Apple Watch & WatchOS 2

New rumours suggest that Apple will release a new range of Apple Watch Sport’s bands and Apple WatchOS 2. There have been some suggestions that Apple will release Apple Watch 2 however this seems hard to believe as there are still rumours of Apple Watch being released in some countries in the coming months. South Africa is not included in these countries.

The Big announcement is most likely to be the new Apple TV. The all new Apple TV is expected to have a full featured App Store and have Siri integration along with a touch-based remote. The new Apple TV is likely to also include a subscription based TV service. The subscription based tv service will not be available at launch and will likely not be available in South Africa.

The new Apple TV is suggested to retail for $149 and $199. Prices in South Africa will most likely be R2999 and R3999 due to the rise exchange rate.

Apple Invites Media to September 9 Event: ‘Hey Siri, Give Us a Hint’

As predicted in August, Apple is planning to hold a media event on Wednesday, September 9 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. Media invites were sent out today, with Yahoo’s Alyssa Bereznak sharing a look at the artwork and tagline for the invitations: “Hey Siri, give us a hint.”

This year’s iPhone-centric event is expected to see the debut of the next-generation iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which, according to rumors, will include a reinforced body constructed from stronger 7000 Series aluminum, Force Touch, an A9 processor, 2GB RAM, and an improved camera.

Rumors have also suggested Apple will use the event to unveil the next-generation Apple TV, a major update from the existing set-top box. It will include a redesigned chassis with an A8 processor, more storage space, and a touch-based remote control, along with a new software system that includes Siri support and a full App Store.

We’ll also get an update on the launch dates of iOS 9 and watchOS 2, and shortly after the event ends, we may see golden master software releases for the two software updates ahead of their final public launch.

In line with past events, the September 9 iPhone unveiling will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple has not yet confirmed whether the event will be live streamed on its website and through the Apple TV, but it is likely details on a live stream will be announced a few days ahead of the event.

At a Media Event on Monday Apple dropped the price of the Apple TV from $99 to $69 in the US. The price drop might take some time to reach South Africa. We expect the price to drop from R1399 to R999 in South Africa.

iStore Online ran a promotion in South Africa during February selling the Apple TV for R1199, a R200 discount. The Apple TV has since disappear from iStore Online.
